My World Sans Me

It was a pristine Monday morning, I was awake, a good ten minutes before my cell phone would usually give its most sterling yet an annoying performance , the 6 O’clock alarm.

I got out of my bed and walked out of my room. Then I remembered I had not taken care of my alarm, means it would shout the obscene alarm tone exactly at 6. This would definitely annoy my sister and mom. Somehow they preferred to hear the noise only from their own mobiles. So I went back to my bed room to switch off the alarm that I had set the previous night.

The very Instant that I entered my bed room, I sensed it was not a normal site that I was looking at. It was the most shocking thing that I have ever seen in my entire life. I was a little confused and wondering if I were hallucinating. Perhaps that was the effect of the article that I had read about the gross technique of waterbaording, right before I went to sleep the previous night.

Nope, it was no hallucination. The alarm went off. But I was not responding. The tone and the vibration did not disturb me. Apparently the auto snooze had come in to action and again there was not a sound. It was only silence.

Lying on my bed was one of the most prominent face that I had looked and admired at, throughout my life. I had never cared what others thought about that face, but I had admired it, a million times.

Again my mobile vibrated while also ringing the alarm tone, Still I didn’t respond, the person on my bed wouldn’t respond either. Strangely I was looking myself on the bed, not lifting my hand to turn off the alarm. I was looking at my own body.

My dad came running to the room, not noticing that I was standing at the threshold of the room, he walked right through me to take my cell and snooze it. He did not even realise that he walked through me, He was telling me that it was time I get up and go to bath.

I had told my family that it was a big day for me, I had been asked to apply for a work permit to work from the client’s location. That moment I realised that I was getting late ( I also realised that I was indeed late ) to catch the 7:10 bus to office.

There was no time for me to stand in front of my own body, it was already 6:15, I went straight in to the bath room to brush my teeth and to take bath. Obviously the water wouldn’t wet me nor would my tooth brush come in contact with my teeth.

Coming out of the bath room, I saw my mom who was standing in front of my bed, telling my dad that I would go in bike and it would not be a issue if I miss the bus, and I wouldn’t be late. They still didn’t seem to realise that I was already late.

I had never come across such a situation. I never had a problem in communicating with my parents. But today it was different, They couldn’t hear me. I tapped on my fathers arm, but he was busy waking me up.

Now realising that It was impossible for me to communicate with them, I started to office. It was already 7, and the bus would come to the stop exactly ten past seven. I started to walk out of my house towards the bus stand.Never knowing what I might do in the office.

When I had reached the  bus stand it was almost 7:10, I was worried that the bus had left the stop. I could not find my fellow bus stop mates either which made me to believe that the bus had indeed left.

Thankfully I could see a white bus with a big “ 19 “ on the windshield. The bus had not left.  Strangely the bus did not slow down near my stop.  I had to board the bus, It was after all a big day for me. I can’t be late.

But the bus did not stop, the driver kept looking straight and was keenly steering the bus straight ahead. I did not realise that I was invisible to the driver until the bus had completely crossed me. Then instinctively I ran behind the bus hoping to get in to it when it stopped in the signal. To my own disbelief I was running really fast and within two or three forward steps I was close to the bus door.

When I tried to pull the handle to open the door, I couldn’t hold it. It was as though trying to catch the mist or fog. I was obviously not getting used to the body less life.

But then with a forward lung I was standing inside the bus. This was a new feature that I was yet to get used to.Within no time I was in the office standing right in front of my wing. I did not have to swipe my access card to get the access, I could just like that walk through the doors.

It was a normal day in the office, guys were busy with their work, apparently no one noticed me and certainly my manager had noticed the vacant cubicle with a print out “ KIRAN “ in lucida console stuck next to my work station. At that moment he placed call from his VoIP to my cell phone. I could immediately recognise my sister’s voice on the other side, obviously she had answered the call.

It looked like she had explained the situation as I could see the facial expression change in my manager’s face. Once he pushed the goodbye button on the VoIP, he immediately started to ruffle his notepad and called out for Nithya.

Why on earth is he calling Nithya, had he discovered about my crush on her?  That was the immediate thought that crossed my mind, but I was shocked to see what happened next, without any hesitation he shared my username and password with her asking her to use my system. When she asked if I were not coming, he casually said I won’t come. I never new things would change so fast.

With complete disappointment I was on my way back to home. In harry potter jargon now I had the option of apparating from one place to another. So I had apparated to my living room, where I was lying on a big block of ice. That was the most horrible scene,I had ever witnessed in my life.

Witness!!! now the billion dollar question was why am I witnessing these things, according to the books the very moment you separate from your body you will have to walk through a bright light that would take you straight to heaven or will have to step in to a huge void that would take you right down to the hell. Of course there is no choice in choosing.

Then I realised I didn’t pass over. I was still hovering with in the mortal world. That was when I tried to frantically search for the void or the bright light. Exactly at that moment I heard a beautiful song on goddess saraswati “ Ya Kundendu Tushaara Haara Dhavalaa Ya Shubhra Vastraanvita Ya Veena Vara Danda Manditakara Ya Shwetha Padmaasana “ I was so happy that I had in fact made it to the heaven, because the song was accompanied with a very bright light.

My dad had switched on the lights in my bed room and was standing in front of me wishing me happy diwali. Again there was a this hymn “Ya Kundendu Tushaara Haara Dhavalaa Ya Shubhra Vastraanvita Ya Veena Vara Danda Manditakara Ya Shwetha Padmaasana” . Then when i looked to my left on my bed, my mobile was vibrating with the tone set to full volume. I was profusely sweating unable to comprehend what had just happened.

Thank god it was just a dream. Slowly the words slipped out of my mouth, “ Happy Diwali daddy“.
